Update: One Arrest Made After Co

NEW HAVEN, CT — The Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School on College Street was placed on lockdown at around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, when a parent advised that a student may have been in possession of a firearm in school, police, and school officials said.

New Haven police got to the school and immediately began searching the building.

By 11:30 a.m., New Haven Public Schools' spokesperson Justin Harmon said that the school was dismissing students early and some students met parents/guardians at the Schubert Theater. City officials said that all students "safety exited" the school before 1 p.m. New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker was on scene at the school as some nearby streets were closed and the area secured by cops for hours.

Meanwhile, New Haven police "K9 officers searched all students and lockers within the school," police spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell said, "but no firearm was located."

"During the course of these searches, a 14-year-old student was found to be in possession of a knife," Dell said. The student was "immediately arrested and charged with possession of a dangerous weapon," she said.

Dell said that police and school officials will "continue to investigate the incident and appropriate charges will be brought against any student involved."

"The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority, and we are grateful for the quick and effective response of the school security officers and law enforcement officials," she said.

Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School, at 177 College St., serves students from New Haven and many surrounding towns.
